Carrier SIM Lock vs. iCloud Activation Lock: How to Tell Which One Your iPhone Has
Learn the critical difference between a wireless carrier SIM restriction ("SIM Not Supported") and Apple’s Find My Activation Lock ("iPhone Locked to Owner") before requesting a service.
Why Confusing These Two Locks Costs Users Time
One of the most common questions our technicians receive on WhatsApp is whether an iPhone needs a Carrier Network Unlock or Clean iCloud Activation Lock assistance. Although both locks prevent you from using the phone normally, they operate on completely different layers of the device.
Unlocking the carrier SIM lock will NOT remove an iCloud Activation Lock, and recovering an Apple ID / Activation Lock will NOT automatically unlock a carrier-locked SIM slot.
1. What Is a Carrier SIM Lock ("SIM Not Supported")?
A Carrier Lock is placed by a wireless network operator (such as AT&T, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, Cricket, or Verizon) so the phone only accepts SIM cards or eSIMs from that carrier.
You can verify your iPhone’s carrier lock status in seconds: open Settings > General > About and scroll to "Carrier Lock." If it says "SIM locked," your iPhone requires a Carrier Network Unlock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," your phone is already carrier-unlocked.
2. What Is Apple Activation Lock ("iPhone Locked to Owner")?
Activation Lock is an Apple security feature tied to Find My and the owner’s Apple ID. It appears on the setup screen after an iPhone or iPad is erased or restored without first signing out of iCloud.
For legitimate device owners with a Clean IMEI (not reported lost or stolen) who cannot access their account or inherited a secondary-market device with proof of purchase, PhoneLibre provides legitimate ownership-verified Clean iCloud assistance.
How Our Payment Policy Applies to Each Service
Both eligible iPhone carrier unlocks (for networks like AT&T, Cricket, and Verizon) and accepted Clean iCloud ownership assistance follow our "Pay After a Successful Unlock" policy. The only exceptions are iPhones locked to T-Mobile, MetroPCS, or legacy Sprint carrier networks, which require advance payment after IMEI verification.
