What Is a SIM Network Unlock PIN (NCK Code) vs. Remote Direct Unlock?
Find out why some Android phones ask for a "SIM Network Unlock PIN" when you insert a new SIM card, while others require a remote Direct Unlock.
What Does "SIM Network Unlock PIN" Mean?
When you insert a SIM card from a different carrier into a locked GSM Android phone (such as many AT&T, Cricket, or international Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Alcatel models), the screen prompts for a "SIM Network Unlock PIN" or "Network Control Key (NCK)."
Important warning: Never enter random guesses or your personal screen lock PIN into this prompt. Most phones have a strict retry counter (typically 5 to 10 attempts) before the modem hard-locks and requires a MCK (Master Unfreeze Code) or Direct Unlock.
When Is Remote Direct Unlock Used Instead of a Code?
Many modern U.S. carrier Android models do not display a keypad code prompt when a foreign SIM is inserted. Instead, they rely on firmware-level carrier locks or Device Unlock apps. For supported models in our 2,146+ record catalog, our technicians perform a Remote Direct Unlock to release the SIM restriction directly.
